Animals

an amazing way to discover and defend our wonderful planet

g

animal of the week...21

The swans are the largest members of waterflow Antaidae family ( which include also ducks and geese), and are among the largest flying species.

Other kind of swan, including the mute swan, trumpeter swan and whooper swan, can reach lenght of over 1,5m and weight over 15 Kg. Their wingspawns can be almost 3m. They, finally, have a patch unfeathered skin between the eyes and bill in the adults.

Swans are generally found in temperate environments, which ralely include tropics. Five species occour in Nothern Hemisphere, one specie ( mute swan, which was introducted artificially) is found in Australia and New Zeeland and just another specie has been sighted in South America.

Several swans are partly migratory, such as mute swan. Many other are wholly migratory, examample given by the white whooper swan and tundra swan.

Swans feed in the water and on land. They are almost entirely herbivorous, although they eat small amounts of aquatic animals. The food sources are roots, tubers, semps and aquatic leaves or submerged plants.

I really thanks the photographer (and my sweet university friend) Anna Paola Di Giorgio for her wonderful pictures of this superb species of mute swan, immortalized on Capodacqua Lake, near Frosinone ( Lazio, Italy)
