Animal of the week...17

Emperors are the largest penguin, about  115 cm of average, and could survive under very low temperature, ( -60C).

They commonly live on the Antarctica ice caps, or in cold water, by huddling togheter to protect themselves against cold: in fact, peguins employ physiological adaptations and cooperative behaviors in order to deal with an incredibly harsh environment. The individuals take turns moving to the groups' protected and relatively warmth. Once penguin has warmed a bit, it will move to the edge of colony so that others can enjoy protection from icy elements.

Female lay just one single egg during the reproduction time, eggs will be kept by male Emperor, which hold the eggs warm; while female could travel also for 80 km to reach the ocean looking for fish. When females come back to the breeding site, they bring a belly full of food that they regurgitate for the newly hatched chicks. Meanwile, male emperators take to the sea in search of food for themselves.

Mothers care for their chicks and protect them with the warmth of they own brood pouches: outside this warm cocoon, chicks will die in few minutes!

In December, Antarctic summer, ice begins to break up and ocean water appears near the breeding state, just as young penguins are ready to swim and catch fish for themselves.
